The Witches

On Wednesday the 16th of February, Wakefield Little Theatre began their children's play, "The Witches" by Roald Dahl, at Wakefield Theatre Royal and Opera House. The story is about two children, (girl, Robyn Harrison-Taylor and Beatrice, Charlotte Best), who get transformed into mice by the grand high witch, (Hayley Sheard.)

There was a cast of thirty plus, and every single one worked to the best of their ability and although they only had three months to rehearse the play, it was outstanding to watch. There was something for all the family, catering for everyone with the hilarious comedy of the chef pulling his trousers down, because he had a mouse in his knickers!

It is clear a lot of hard work went into the play, there being lots of trap doors and lighting, to add drama and surprise to the piece. The director, Gail Rogers said "It went very well after a shakey start, but like all shows it was very tiring, and I had a lot of fun working with the cast."

Pam Thomas did a brilliant job with all the props, helped by her husband Glyn Thomas, who was part of the back stage crew. Pam and Glyn also painted the whole set! In addition, Elizabeth Hampton did a fantastic job of the costumes. The show was produced by Paul Hayley, who has done lots of successful shows at the theatre and the sound and lighting were perfectly done by Jack Wigley, Barry davenport and Alex Taylor.

260 people came to watch one night and a thousand came, in total, for the whole week. It was an amazing play and I cannot wait for them to perform another!
