Gnomeo and Juliet
Debbie Chown
Nowadays, film producers are frequently issuing remakes of Shakespeare's plays. This film, created by Toronto-based Starz Animation, is both a sweet and witty remake of Romeo and Juliet - hence the name. The obscurely romantic storyline, centred on gnomes, adds a comic twist, making this tragedy very amusing; a great film to see with your friends.
The film uses music by Lady Gaga and Elton John and this adds to the fun. The songs are very catchy and popular with all teenagers, and I even danced along!
Some parts clearly resemble key scenes from the traditional play and well known lines are incoporated. The prologue of William Shakespeare's play has been included and the comedy starts right from the beginning.
The actors were well casted and the voices fit well the characters. Ozzy Osborne stars as a Fawn; an antagonising garden deer. Other voices include Emily Blunt, as Juliet, and James McAvoy as Gnomeo Montague. Benny, plays the part as Benvolio and Nannette symbolises Juliet's nanny.
This film is great to watch with family and friends. It's a great film to cheer you up and turns everyday gnomes into fighters, lovers and jokers.
